Class Descriptions

 

 

Pre-School (Ages 2 1/2 to 4): Ballet/Tap/Jazz Combo; Tumbling & Kid-Hop Combination

The ballet, tap & jazz combo class will be offered to dancers who will be 2 1/2 years of age by September 1 (dancers are divided into one of two classes by age). The 45-minute creative movement class will focus on simple dance technique (pre-ballet & pre-tap technique), coordination, flexibility, creativity and imagination. Required class attire consists of a leotard, skirt and convertible tights; additionally, the purchase of ballet shoes & tap shoes is required for class (all required attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe & attire information). Students enrolled in the ballet, tap & jazz class will perform in a minimum of 2 spring recital pieces (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

Tumbling & Kid-Hop is a 45 minute class that meets once a week and is also offered to Pre-School age students. Tumbling & Kid-Hop classes will focus on flexibility, coordination, balance and strength and basic dance skills; skills will include rolls, bridges, cartwheels, skipping, galloping & chasse. All tumbling time will be spent on tumbling mats. Required attire includes a leotard, dance shorts, footless tights and bare feet for girls or gym shorts, a fitted top & bare feet for boys. Students enrolled in tumbling & kid-hop will participate in 2 dances in the spring recital (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

 

Kindergarten-5th Grade: Ballet/Tap/Jazz Combination; Clogging; Clogging & Jazz Combination; Cheer; Hip-Hop; Acro

The Ballet, Tap & Jazz Combination class is offered to dancers who will enter kindergarten-5th grade in the fall of the dance year. This combo class is initially divided by grade level (K-1st; 2nd-3rd; 4th-5th), and then by skill level as necessary. The 60-minute Ballet, Tap & Jazz Class will build fundamentals for tap and jazz while introducing vocabulary and technical elements of Ballet. Required class attire consists of a leotard, tights, dance skirt or dance shorts, ballet shoes, tap shoes and slip-on jazz shoes (all dance attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information).  Dancers enrolled in the Ballet, Tap & Jazz Combo Class will perform in 1 tap dance, 1 ballet dance and 1 jazz dance during the spring recital (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

Dancers who will enter Kindergarten-5th grade in the fall of the dance year also have the option of beginning clogging lessons. Beginner Clogging is a 30-minute class that will cover basic clogging steps and vocabulary (dancers enrolled in Clogging will be divided into one of two classes; classes will first be divided by age, then by skill level if necessary). Required attire for the Beginner Clogging Class consists of a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights and white clogging shoes with Buck Taps (required dance attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information). Dancers enrolled in the Beginner Clogging Class will perform 1 clogging routine in the spring dance recital (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

Dancers who will enter Kindergarten-5th grade in the fall of the dance year may also choose a clogging & jazz combination class. Clogging & Jazz is a 60-minute class that meets once a week and will cover basic clogging steps and vocabulary as well as basic jazz steps & vocabulary. Dancers are initially placed in one of two classes, first by age and then by skill level if necessary. Required attire consists of a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights, white clogging shoes with Buck Taps and slip-on jazz shoes (required attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe information). Dancers enrolled in the Clogging & Jazz Combination Class will perform 1 clogging routine and 1 jazz routine in the spring dance recital (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

The Cheer class will be offered to dancers who enter Kindergarten-5th grade in the fall of the dance year. This is a 45 minute class that meets once a week. Class will focus on flexibility, coordination and strength while developing skills necessary for: handstands, walkovers, round-offs, & back-handsprings; basic cheer motions will be covered as well as basic jazz dance technique.  Required attire includes a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights and bare feet for the tumbling portion, while students will be required to have slip-on jazz shoes for the cheer & dance portion of class (required attire should be purchased from Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information). Students enrolled in Cheer class will perform in 2 dances in the spring recital (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

Dancers who enter Kindergarten-5th grade in the fall of the dance year are eligible to take Hip-Hop. This is a 30 minute or 45 minute class (depending upon age of students enrolled; dancers are initially placed in one of two classes by age, then by skill level if necessary) will teach basic hip-hop elements. Up-beat, kid friendly music will be used during class. Class requirements include a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights and slip-on jazz shoes (required attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information). Dancers enrolled in Hip-Hop will perform in one or two routines in the spring dance recital, depending on the progression of the class (the purchase of one costume AND hip-hop performance shoes will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90; hip-hop performance shoe price will range from $50-$60).

 

Middle & High School (Intermediate & Advanced Classes): Tap & Jazz Combination Class; Ballet & Lyrical Combination Class; Clogging; Hip-Hop

 Dancers who enter the 6th-12th grade in the fall of the dance year are eligible to take the Intermediate or Advanced Tap & Jazz Combination Class. This is a 45-minute class (intermediate) or 60 minute class (advanced) that meets once per week. The Tap & Jazz Combination Class will focus on continued development of technical skills. Students at this level will be expected to work outside of class to perfect technique and accomplish performance goals as they will be exposed to more advanced movement while in class. Required attire includes a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights, tap shoes and slip-on jazz shoes (required attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information; NOTE: the 2017 Advanced Tap & Jazz class will ALSO be required to purchase character jazz shoes). Students enrolled in the Intermediate or Advanced Tap & Jazz Combination Class will perform a minimum of 1 tap dance and 1 jazz dance in the spring recital (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

 Dancers who enter the 6th-12th grade in the fall of the dance year are eligible to take the Intermediate or Advanced Ballet & Lyrical Combination Class. This is a 45-minute class that meets once per week. The Ballet & Lyrical Combination Class will focus on continued development of technical skills. Students at this level will be expected to work outside of class to perfect technique and accomplish performance goals as they will be exposed to more advanced movement while in class. Required attire includes a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights, lyrical thongs and ballet shoes (required attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information). Students enrolled in the Intermediate or Advanced Ballet & Lyrical Combination Class will perform a minimum of 1 ballet dance and 1 lyrical dance in the spring recital (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

Dancers who enter the 6th-12th grade in the fall of the dance year may choose to continue their clogging studies with a 45-minute clogging class each week.  During this class focus will be on development of more advanced clogging steps and technique. Students enrolled in the Intermediate Clogging Class  or Advanced Clogging Class will be expected to work outside of class to perfect technique and accomplish performance goals, as they will be exposed to more advanced Clogging steps in class. Required attire includes a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights and white clogging shoes with Buck Taps (required attire should be purchased through Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information).  Students enrolled in the intermediate or Advanced Clogging Class will perform in 1 or 2 clogging routines in the spring recital, depending upon the progression of the class (the purchase of one costume will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90).

Dancers who enter 6th-12th grade in the fall of the dance year have the option of enrolling in Hip-Hop. This class will meet for 45 minutes each week and cover popular hip-hop dance moves. Class music will consist of edited, class appropriate versions of popular songs. Class requirements include a leotard, dance shorts, convertible tights and slip-on jazz shoes (required attire should be purchased though Carolina Dance Company; please see Shoe Requirements for detailed shoe and attire information). Dancers enrolled in Hip-Hop will perform in 1 or 2 routines in the spring dance recital, depending upon the progression of the class (the purchase of one costume AND hip-hop performance shoes will be required to participate in the recital; costume price will range from $70-$90; hip-hop performance shoe price will range from $50-$60).
